SWEC Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, announced the decision on Sunday during a press briefing in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
Shafa said the resolution followed an emergency meeting convened to review the intervention by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in the industrial action, which began on April 20, 2026.
According to him, the council considered the minister’s commitments and agreed to call off the strike in the interest of students and the education sector.
He disclosed that Wike approved a monthly funding package of ₦5 billion to address teachers’ welfare and outstanding entitlements.
“The minister approved the release of ₦2 billion monthly from FCT Internally Generated Revenue, alongside ₦3 billion from the 10 per cent IGR allocation to the Area Councils, to implement the 40 per cent peculiar allowance and clear outstanding entitlements owed primary school teachers,” Shafa said.
On career progression, he noted that the minister also pledged to work with the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to resolve longstanding promotion concerns affecting teachers.
According to him, the plan includes removing vacancy limitations for promotions and reviewing the 2024 promotion exercise.
Following the decision, the union directed all affected teachers in the FCT to resume duties.
“Arising from the stakeholders’ resolution, the council has directed all FCT primary and secondary school teachers to return to classrooms on Monday, April 27,” he said.
Shafa also warned against victimisation of teachers who participated in the strike, stressing that the union would resist any punitive measures.
He added that the union could revisit its position if the FCT Administration fails to fulfil the agreed commitments.
The NUT leadership praised teachers for their unity throughout the industrial action and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing their welfare and working conditions.
The suspension of the strike is expected to restore normal academic activities in public schools across the Federal Capital Territory.
