In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, APC State Publicity Secretary Darlington Nwauju emphasized that the NWC should respect the court ruling. Justice Sika Aprioku of the Rivers State High Court had previously removed the Caretaker Committee led by Chief Tony Okocha, asserting that the NWC lacked the authority to dissolve an elected executive before its term ended. The court also prohibited the Okocha-led committee from interfering with the Beke-led leadership until the end of their tenure.
Okocha has since rejected the ruling and announced plans to appeal the decision. Meanwhile, the APC NWC announced on Thursday that it would continue to recognize the Okocha-led Caretaker Committee as the legitimate leadership in Rivers State.
Nwauju criticized the NWC’s stance, calling it a national embarrassment and a source of internal discord within the party. He warned that organizing new congresses in Rivers State would be both illegal and a waste of resources.
Nwauju further urged the NWC to seek an unbiased interpretation of the court ruling from August 12, 2024, which is the only judgment concerning APC’s elected executives in Rivers State. He also expressed concerns about potential attempts to manipulate or backdate judgments to undermine the state executives and appealed to the NWC to avoid political maneuvers that could distract the President from his agenda.
