The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) has threatened to cut power supply to Etche Local Government in Rivers State following a violent attack on their member, Gboro Benjamin. Benjamin, an employee of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company and the Association’s Occupational Health and Safety Officer, was attacked while on duty to inspect prepaid meters at Diamond Estate, Umuebule IV. The incident occurred at the residence of a customer whose meter was allegedly being shared with a nearby bar.
Douglas explained that Benjamin was checking for meter bypasses when he was pushed from a stool by the customer’s angry family member. The situation escalated when other individuals from the bar intervened, leading to Benjamin being assaulted.
After learning of the attack, Douglas contacted PHED officials to involve the police. He noted that the investigation was complicated by a police officer who allegedly had ties to the assailant’s family and threatened SSAEAC representatives with mob violence.
The union has issued a four-day ultimatum for the arrest of the assailant, warning that if no action is taken, they will initiate a shutdown of electricity supply in the entire Etche Local Government. Douglas stated, “Nobody should assault our members while they perform their legitimate duties. If we shut down the local government and there’s no progress, we may escalate the situation across Rivers State.” He emphasized that the association would take all necessary steps to ensure justice for its members.
