Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has clarified that the ongoing demolition of buildings in the state is a proactive measure to safeguard against flooding and related hazards. Stressing the criticality of maintaining clear rights of way, he emphasized that no structures encroaching on these paths will be exempt from demolition, particularly as Lagos is situated below sea level.
Speaking during a live media discussion on economic challenges aired on TVC, Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding the law regarding rights of way, ensuring that all violators, including government staff, are held accountable.
The concept of rights of way entails the legal right to traverse over another’s property or to prioritize certain types of traffic. Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of this principle in ensuring efficient urban infrastructure and preventing traffic-related crimes, citing instances of criminal activities along bridges and rail lines in areas like Obalende and Ijora.
Addressing concerns about the impact of demolitions on affected individuals, the governor emphasized the necessity of enforcing regulations to protect critical infrastructure and public safety. He acknowledged the inconvenience caused by such actions, citing examples of economic disruptions due to incidents like the fire under the Apongbon bridge, which necessitated its closure for nine months.
Sanwo-Olu underscored the imperative for all citizens to abide by the rule of law, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in maintaining the city’s infrastructure and respecting shared spaces. He assured that demolitions are carried out with fairness, with allowances made for minimal disruptions where possible, while still ensuring compliance with regulations.
In closing, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged cooperation from all stakeholders in preserving Lagos’ urban environment and ensuring its long-term sustainability, emphasizing that adherence to regulations is essential for the well-being of all residents.
