Sheikh Gumi Outlines Solutions For Tackling Lakurawa Terrorists In Nigeria
Sheikh Gumi Outlines Solutions For Tackling Lakurawa Terrorists In NigeriaIslamic scholar and preacher, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has urged the Nigerian government to establish a dedicated paramilitary force to address the growing threat posed by the Lakurawa terrorist group in the northern part of the country. Speaking on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Gumi highlighted that the ideology of Lakurawa closely mirrors that of other fanatical religious sects, as evidenced by their recent violent attack on Mera Community in Kebbi State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā¶
Gumi criticized the Nigerian military, stating that it is not equipped to combat terrorism, as its structure is designed to confront conventional military threats, not insurgent groups. He argued that a specialized paramilitary force, more familiar with the local terrain, would be better suited to tackling the Lakurawa sect and other similar groups.
āThere are foreign superpowers involved because Nigeria is rich in minerals and fertile land. They come, cause chaos, and then offer their protection in exchange,ā Gumi said. āOur military is modeled after the British Army, and its primary function is to fight other militaries. If Nigeria were to go to war with the Niger Republic, we would deploy our military. But military forces are not designed to fight bandits or terrorist groups.ā
He also pointed out that the militaryās focus on firepower and traditional warfare methods makes it less effective in dealing with insurgents and banditry.
In addition, Gumi linked the rise of terrorism to issues of illiteracy and economic hardship, urging the government to invest in education, particularly by reviving programs like the Almajiri schools introduced by former President Goodluck Jonathan. He also called for measures to alleviate poverty and strengthen border security to prevent further infiltration by terrorist groups.
āThe government needs to address the root causes, such as illiteracy and economic challenges. We need to provide education and reduce hardship. Additionally, our porous borders need to be secured to prevent external actors from exploiting the situation,ā Gumi stated.
He concluded by warning that the growing number of insurgent groups, including Boko Haram, ISWAP, and various bandit factions, could further destabilize the region and stretch Nigeriaās military resources to the breaking point.
