On Tuesday, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima announced that President Bola Tinubu ordered the release of minors on trial for treason on compassionate grounds. Shettima stated that there is video and photographic evidence of some protesters, which was shared by the individuals involved.

He expressed concern over the loss of over N300 billion due to the destruction and disruption of economic activities caused by the protests. Shettima made these comments while receiving the minors at the Presidential Villa after the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, dropped the charges against them.

“The President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has instructed the release of these individuals on humanitarian grounds, despite undeniable digital evidence of their actions, some of which they posted themselves,” Shettima said. He emphasized that the President, as a father figure to the nation, is giving these young men another chance to become responsible citizens and contribute positively to Nigeria’s future.

Shettima urged the minors not to allow themselves to be manipulated into violence or the destruction of property, highlighting the significant economic losses incurred during the protests. “I advise you to take advantage of the President’s generous gesture to better yourselves and become responsible members of society,” he added.
