In a statement on Tuesday, Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, revealed that this decision was made to ensure a fair hearing and avoid the legal delays that have hindered the case.

According to the statement, Kanu’s choice to represent himself marks a crucial turning point in his legal battle.

It reads: “On Friday, March 21, 2025, as Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s trial resumes before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja, he will take the bold step of defending himself in court.

“This marks a defining moment in a case that has already exposed significant concerns about the Nigerian judiciary’s handling of issues related to Biafra’s self-determination struggle.”

The statement further claims that Kanu’s self-representation will highlight the judiciary’s handling of similar cases, potentially exposing deep-rooted issues.

It continues: “Without traditional legal representation, the usual ‘as my lord pleases’ formalities that often obscure justice in Nigeria’s judicial system will be stripped away, allowing the world to witness the institutional bias that has plagued this case.”

Allegations of Judicial Bias and Legal Battles

The statement also ties Kanu’s decision to his past legal victories, particularly the removal of Justice Binta Nyako from his case.

It explains: “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s decision follows his successful push for the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako, who openly disregarded the Supreme Court’s judgment. She was determined to convict someone for exercising a right that Nigerian law clearly protects.”

Additionally, the statement accuses the Federal Government of conducting the trial with bias from the outset.
