Led by Aweni Dio Maisamari, the former Chairman of the Adara Development Association (ADA), the plaintiffs are seeking 2.3 billion naira in damages.

Gloria Ballason, the plaintiffs’ counsel, stated, “My client was unjustly imprisoned by the previous state administration for over three months in 2019 and was released after no evidence was found against them. We are here to address the case of the unjust imprisonment of the Adara Elders, who are seeking the enforcement of their fundamental rights.”

Ballason noted that their Chief, Rafael Maiwada Galadima, was killed under suspicious circumstances around the same time the arrests occurred during El-Rufai’s administration.

She emphasized that Aweni Dio Maisamari and eight others were detained for over three months before the court dismissed the case, finding no grounds for their arrest.

“It was El-Rufai who specifically ordered the detention of Mr. Aweni Dio Maisamari without any investigation or reasonable suspicion of a crime,” Ballason added.

She described the El-Rufai administration as notorious for rights violations, ranging from killings to wrongful imprisonments and assaults.

The plaintiffs are seeking a permanent injunction for 900 million naira for arbitrary arrest, compensation of 100 million naira for general and exemplary damages, 500 million naira for other damages, and special damages totaling 800 million naira for the violations of their rights.
