Speaking at the Punch 50th anniversary lecture in Lagos, Soyinka highlighted this trend, stating, “Politicians understand the terms when they are not in office but turn to something else when they assume office.”

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the term “restructuring,” Soyinka emphasized the need to delve deeper into the issue, asserting, “It is the same thing with reconstruction, and it is time to look into it because it is not a slogan.”

Additionally, Soyinka urged government leaders at all levels to refrain from misleading the Nigerian populace and instead focus on bridging the gap between governance and the governed. He stressed the importance of governments being closer to the people, asserting, “It’s about time leaders stop taking us for a ride so that the government can come close to the people.”

Soyinka advocated for decentralization of federal government power as the most effective means to foster development in Nigeria. He criticized leaders who abandon decentralization once in power, emphasizing the necessity of embracing it for sustainable development.

Furthermore, Soyinka highlighted the shortcomings of temporary solutions like palliatives, asserting that only decentralized development can address the root of the nation’s problems.

In discussing restructuring, Soyinka preferred terms like “reconfiguration” and “decentralization,” which he believes are more understandable and practical. He emphasized the importance of bringing power closer to the people to enhance productivity and foster citizen-led development.

In conclusion, Soyinka urged leaders to overcome their fear of national collapse and embrace decentralization as a means to address Nigeria’s challenges effectively. He warned against the informal fragmentation of the nation and stressed the need for proactive measures to ensure sustainable development and unity.
