Abbas voiced his concerns at a stakeholders’ meeting of the House Committee on Environment, which focused on the impact of climate change on these conflicts. He was represented by Dicsok Teke. Abbas pointed out the severe consequences of the clashes, including displacement of families and extreme food insecurity.
He called for the adoption of modern farming techniques to tackle food insecurity and advocated for a transition from nomadic to ranching practices. Abbas attributed the delay to a lack of political will and inadequate laws, urging both state and federal governments to allocate resources and pass necessary legislation.
Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, represented by Prof. Bolaji Babatunde, emphasized Nigeria’s obligation to prepare for climate change. He committed to collaborating with lawmakers to engage stakeholders and address the farmer-herder disputes.
Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Terseer Ugbor, expressed concern over the situation in Benue State, where over three million people have been displaced due to the violence.
