Responding to the celebrations that followed the release of the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment on the Labour Party leadership tussle—during a parallel NEC meeting held by LP presidential candidate Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti in Abuja—Ifoh criticized the gathering, stating that their supporters were celebrating in vain.

Speaking in an interview with Punch, Ifoh, who represents the Julius Abure-led leadership, said the Supreme Court’s judgment did not, at any point, direct Abure to step down.

“They are jubilating over nothing. The Supreme Court’s position on party leadership is unambiguous,” he stated.

In a subsequent press statement issued in Abuja, Ifoh accused Senator Nenadi Usman and her allies of misinterpreting the ruling and misleading the public. He urged them to thoroughly review the court document instead of spreading false narratives.

He stated:
“As earlier cautioned, Senator Usman and her associates have embarked on a campaign of misrepresentation, twisting the apex court’s verdict. (Attached is a copy of the CTC). Nowhere in the judgment did the court declare the tenure of the Abure-led leadership as expired, nor did it endorse the Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee to assume control of the party.

“The Supreme Court made it clear that internal party matters fall within the purview of the party itself, and that party supremacy must be upheld. It is important to reiterate that there is no leadership vacuum in the Labour Party. The party’s national convention, held in March 2024, validly elected its executives in accordance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act, and their mandate remains in force.

“Therefore, any meeting held outside the bounds of the party’s constitution is deemed illegal, and its outcomes are null and void. We urge those involved in the unauthorized gathering in Abuja to desist from further actions that may deepen factional divisions within the party. Disciplinary measures will be taken if necessary.”
