The police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, identified Friday Igwe and Nnabugwe Ebube as the perpetrators behind the murder of three parishioners at Immaculate Catholic Conception Parish in Nkwagu, Abakaliki. The incident, which occurred on December 24, 2023, saw armed assailants invade the church premises, killing Cyril Obinna Mbam, Nwifuru Chukwuebuka Mathew, and Alo Onyedikachi Solomon. The suspects also stole a black Toyota Corolla belonging to the late Obinna Cyril Mbam.

Law enforcement promptly took action, leading to the arrest of Igwe and Ebube, the recovery of the stolen vehicle, and the provision of leads for further arrests.

Additionally, one of the apprehended suspects, Njoku Michael from Abia State, shared details of his involvement in the kidnapping of United States and United Kingdom returnees in Afikpo, Afikpo Local Government area of the state. Michael claimed he was lured into the crime by an individual known as ‘Alhaji.’

According to Michael, Alhaji initially approached him to borrow money, claiming ownership of many cows. Later, Alhaji offered Michael a job in Afikpo, describing it as manure work with the promise of a significant income. However, upon arrival in Afikpo, Michael realized the true nature of the plan when Alhaji and his associates unveiled firearms.

Together, they stopped a vehicle on a bush path, forcibly took the occupants—a man and a woman—into captivity, and led them to a thick forest. Michael confessed to receiving $30 from the $40 million ransom, which was paid in both dollars and naira.

This police operation highlights significant progress in addressing and apprehending individuals involved in serious criminal activities within the region.
