Mr. James Budebo, head of the Damangaza community, disclosed this distressing news during a one-day outreach program held in Abuja on Friday.
The outreach, jointly organized by the Primary Health Care in Damangaza and the Vaccine Network for Disease Control (VNDC), aimed to provide critical health interventions in underserved communities.
Measles, a highly contagious viral infection characterized by symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinct rash, poses significant risks, especially to young children and individuals with weakened immune systems. It can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
Budebo emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing measles outbreaks and its associated complications, stressing the urgent need for widespread immunization to safeguard the community.
Mrs. Chika Offor, CEO of VNDC, underscored the significance of the one-day outreach in responding to the health crisis in Damangaza. She highlighted its role in providing immediate assistance and laying the groundwork for long-term community resilience.
Offor further mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance vaccine accessibility and provide accurate information to address community concerns and misconceptions. She reiterated that the deaths resulting from measles were preventable and affirmed VNDC’s commitment to fostering community dialogue on vaccination and public health strategies.
Ms. Longtang Shawen, a health worker at PHC Damangaza, pointed out that the outbreak had exacerbated existing healthcare access challenges within the community. She emphasized the crucial role of education in empowering the community about vaccine-preventable diseases, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
Shawen stressed the critical importance of vaccination in preventing measles outbreaks, protecting individuals, and ensuring community-wide immunity. She urged residents to embrace vaccination to shield against preventable diseases and safeguard vulnerable populations.
Chief Bello Musa, Head of Damangaza Hausawa, confirmed that the Public Health Department of the FCT had been alerted to the situation, with prior visits conducted two weeks ago.
In response, Dr. Teresa Nwachukwu, FCT Epidemiologist, expressed her commitment to investigating the current outbreak.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) data highlighted significant measles cases reported across various states by December 2023, underscoring the urgent need for vaccination campaigns and public health interventions nationwide.
