Tension Brews As NLC Threatens Showdown Against Natasha’s Ouster
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to mobilise nationwide resistance against the National Assembly if Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) is not reinstated after her suspension. NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in a strongly worded statement on Thursday, described the Senate’s move as a “brazen assault on democracy” and warned that labour would not watch in silence.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Nigerian people, united across ethnic and religious lines, will not stand idly by while you cannibalise our democracy,” Ajaero declared. “An attack on one senator today is an attack on the sovereignty of every Nigerian voter tomorrow. The labour movement will deploy its immense strength to resist this slide into autocracy.”
Court Orders Ignored, Democracy Undermined
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, through her lawyer, Michael Numa (SAN), had earlier warned of legal action against the Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamorudeen Ogunlana, if she was not allowed to resume duties by Monday. The lawmaker’s six-month suspension had already been voided by a court, yet the Senate leadership has continued to block her return, citing that the matter remains “sub judice.”
Ajaero slammed the move as “impunity and moral bankruptcy,” accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his allies of deliberately silencing opposition voices. He argued that depriving Kogi Central of representation amounted to disenfranchising an entire senatorial district and undermining the rule of law.
Labour Movement Draws a Line
According to the NLC, the Senate’s actions represent more than political infighting; they are a direct assault on Nigeria’s democratic foundation. “By disenfranchising Kogi Central, the Senate is effectively stealing the people’s voice in lawmaking and national resource allocation,” Ajaero said.
He warned that labour would not allow the legislature to use “frivolous technicalities” to perpetuate injustice. “This is not just about one senator. It is a test-run for silencing opposition ahead of 2027. Nigerians must resist this attempt to destroy democracy.”
