Leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State held a protest on Wednesday at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Benin, contesting the results of the September 21 governorship election. INEC had declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner, with Okpebholo receiving 291,667 votes compared to the PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo’s 247,274 votes. During the protest, PDP members displayed banners with messages such as “INEC sack Edo REC” and “INEC give us our mandate.” They also chanted phrases like “Oshiomhole, Tinubu give us our mandate.” Security agencies were deployed to prevent the protesters from approaching the INEC office in Aduwawa, Benin.
In response, the APC’s Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, dismissed the protest, stating that it would not change the election outcome. He encouraged the PDP to take their grievances to the tribunal with evidence if they believed their mandate had been stolen. Uwadiae-Igbinigie asserted that the people of Edo had voted for the APC, indicating a clear desire for a change in governance.
The PDP protest was led by party chairman Tony Aziegbemi, Mathew Iduoriyekewen, Director General of the Asue/Ogie Campaign Management Council, and Deputy Director General of Media and Publicity Olu Martins. Aziegbemi addressed the crowd, urging INEC to declare Ighodalo the rightful winner, alleging that election results from certain local government areas were manipulated. He emphasized, “If we had lost this election in a free and fair contest, we would have congratulated them, but because they stole our mandate, we can’t.”
Aziegbemi expressed confidence that the PDP would reclaim its mandate through the tribunal, stating, “We will present overwhelming evidence.” He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a peaceful protest, highlighting that it has remained violence-free. Iduoriyekewen echoed these sentiments, asserting that the PDP would continue to protest until Ighodalo’s mandate is recognized.
Uwadiae-Igbinigie reiterated that the election results were final and encouraged the PDP to pursue their claims through the appropriate legal channels if they had substantial evidence to support their assertions.
