Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested Marxist activist and leader of the Talakawa Parliament, Comrade Kola Edokpayi, in Benin City, Edo State, over his alleged involvement in organizing a Pan-African solidarity rally in support of Burkina Faso’s revolutionary leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Naija News, Edokpayi’s arrest on Saturday, May 3, 2025, has sparked widespread condemnation from human rights groups, civil society actors, and pan-African movements across the continent. Many have denounced the arrest as a blatant case of political suppression and a violation of fundamental human rights.

Organizers of the rally explained that the event was part of a broader continental campaign backing Captain Traoré’s resistance against French neo-colonialism in West Africa, with sister protests scheduled in countries like Ghana and South Africa.

Sources close to Edokpayi told SaharaReporters that prior to the event, he was summoned by the Edo State Commissioner of Police and asked to cancel the rally—a directive he complied with. However, DSS and police personnel later raided his office, arresting six individuals. While four were later released, Edokpayi and another activist remained in custody.

The Edo State chapter of the Take It Back (TIB) Movement has demanded his immediate and unconditional release, decrying the arrest as an unlawful act of political persecution.

“Comrade Edokpayi was arrested simply for showing solidarity with Burkina Faso’s government under Captain Ibrahim Traoré. This is a flagrant assault on the rights of Nigerian citizens and a shameful abuse of state power,” the TIB stated.

Edo State TIB Coordinator, Comrade Hafiz Lawal, condemned the action as “legally baseless and morally unjust,” asserting that Nigerian security agencies are increasingly being used to silence dissenting voices.

He emphasized that Edokpayi’s actions were protected under Sections 38, 39, and 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee freedom of thought, expression, and peaceful assembly.
