Confusion gripped the State High Court in Ilaro, Ogun State, when Department of State Services (DSS) operatives unexpectedly entered the courthouse on Tuesday, apprehending two defendants. According to reports obtained by Naija News, Alhaji Isiaka Fatai and Samuel Oyero were swiftly taken into custody, sparking widespread outrage.
The trial, registered under the case HCP/IC/2023, involved the State versus Awode Oladosu & 13 others. Presiding over the proceedings was Justice A.A. Shobayo. The case centered on arson allegations brought by Chief Akeem Adigun (aka Socopao) against Alhaji Isiaka Fatai, Oyero, and 12 others. A recent crisis in the Agosasa community, Ipokia Local Government Area, led to property damage amounting to billions of naira and loss of life due to a dispute over town leadership.
Chaos erupted as DSS operatives intervened and apprehended the suspects within the court premises. Kehinde Bamiwola, counsel to Alhaji Isiaka, alleged that the operatives resorted to force, stating, “Alhaji Isiaka Fatai was beaten, slapped, manhandled, rough-handled, and molested.”
Condemnation of the incident came from Comrade Omololu Olusanya, Principal Registrar of the High Court and Sectional Head of the High Court, Ilaro. He expressed astonishment at the disregard for the rule of law despite the judge’s clear directive against arrests within the court premises.
“They still went ahead and did the act to the extent that they assaulted one of our staff members, Mrs. Fadina, while doing that act. It’s a very sad issue that caused a lot of noise within the court premises,” Olusanya lamented.
DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya had not issued an official statement regarding the incident at the time of this report.
