The incident unfolded after Adesina and President Buhari returned from a 17-hour flight from Seoul, South Korea, where they participated in the World Bio Summit organized by the World Health Organisation in October 2022. In his recently launched book, ‘Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015-2023),’ Adesina recounted the challenges he faced due to the demanding trip.

“On the way back from Seoul, flying time was 17 hours. The explanation a layman like me would understand was that we were flying against the wind. But it was a strenuous trip,” he wrote. Despite feeling weary, Adesina had committed to presenting at a seminar on Strategic Communication organized by the NSCDC.

Adesina reflected, “I knew I was weary and needed rest, but I had given my word that I would be available. The first thing that should have flashed an alarm bell in my mind was that when I got out of bed that morning, I staggered a bit.” During the presentation, he lost focus, became disoriented, and struggled to see his notes. Observing his distress, Dr. Peter Afunnaya, spokesman for the Department of State Services, guided him to his seat, leading to Adesina seeking immediate medical attention.

Realizing the toll on his health, Adesina emphasized the importance of self-care, stating, “Do not think you are indestructible. So watch it because your health also matters. Do not drive yourself to breaking point.”

In addition to this incident, Adesina also recounted a harrowing experience in November 2015 when Buhari’s official jet encountered severe turbulence en route to Malta for a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Despite the challenging conditions, the plane landed safely, prompting a concerned Buhari to question the captain about the landing quality. Adesina highlighted that such incidents underscored the vulnerability of presidential jets to adverse weather conditions.
