Yar’Adua had a history of health problems, including kidney disease and pericarditis, an inflammation of the lining surrounding the heart. In November 2009, he travelled to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment and did not inform the Nigerian public or the National Assembly of his trip. For several months, there were conflicting reports about Yar’Adua’s health and whether he was able to govern. In February 2010, the National Assembly passed a resolution making Vice President Goodluck Jonathan the Acting President, which was later confirmed by the courts. Jonathan assumed the role of Acting President, but Yar’Adua’s absence continued to cast a shadow over the country.
On May 5, 2010, Yar’Adua died at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria. The cause of death was officially announced as acute pericarditis, although there were also reports that he had lung cancer.
