Former Minister of Information under the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Lai Mohammed, has reiterated his position that no massacre occurred at the Lekki Tollgate during the EndSARS protests of October 20, 2020.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Mohammed acknowledged that lives were lost during the nationwide protests but maintained that the fatalities did not occur at the Lekki Tollgate.
“Our stance on EndSARS has always been clear. At no time did the Federal Government deny that there were casualties during the protests—there were,” he said.
He noted that the government officially documented and admitted the deaths, revealing that 37 police officers and six soldiers lost their lives during the unrest.
“These figures were reported and acknowledged. People died in places like Kano and Abuja, among others. What we have consistently maintained, however, is that there was no massacre at the Lekki Tollgate,” he stated.
Mohammed also took issue with international media reports, particularly those by CNN, arguing that the network relied on unverified accounts.
“This is where I disagreed with CNN. They were not present at the Lekki Tollgate and based their report on poorly sourced information,” he said.
Describing the Lekki Tollgate incident as a unique global claim, Mohammed argued that it was being referred to as a massacre despite the absence of bodies.
He disclosed that he dedicated an entire chapter to the incident in his book, Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments That Defined an Administration, which he said aims to correct what he described as misconceptions in public discourse.
“This is the only alleged massacre in the world with no bodies. While people died in areas such as Alimosho and elsewhere, there was no massacre at the tollgate. I challenge anyone today to come forward and say, ‘My son or daughter was at the Lekki Tollgate and never returned home,’” he said.
