President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a statement in response to the tragic passing of his Iranian counterpart, President Ebrahim Raisi. It was earlier reported by Naija News that President Raisi was involved in a helicopter accident.
President Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were both aboard the helicopter when it experienced a rough landing on Sunday. The incident occurred near Jolfa, a city situated on the border with Azerbaijan, in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.
Search and rescue teams had been scouring the area since Sunday afternoon when the helicopter carrying the president, foreign minister, and other officials went missing. The missing helicopter was eventually located early Monday by relief workers, and state TV confirmed the tragic news of the president’s demise.
In a statement released on Monday morning through his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the government and people of Iran. He expressed deep sorrow over the distressing incident and commended President Raisi as a committed leader dedicated to Iran’s progress.
President Tinubu also conveyed sympathies to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the continued peace, stability, and prosperity of Iran. On behalf of Nigeria, he assured Iran of unwavering support and solidarity during this period of mourning.
