The announcement was made in a statement from Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, on Monday.
According to the minister, the policy is a comprehensive strategy designed to manage, utilize, and mitigate the migration of health workers. It also aims to attract professionals back to Nigeria through enticing incentives and to reintegrate them into the country’s health system.
The statement highlights that the policy will use the expertise of the Nigerian diaspora to address gaps in the health sector. Additionally, it will pursue reciprocal agreements with other countries to ensure that the exchange of health workers benefits Nigeria.
“We urge recipient countries to implement a 1:1 training match, whereby each foreign-trained Nigerian health worker they receive is replaced by one trained locally,” Pate said.
The policy also emphasizes work-life balance by including provisions for routine health checks, mental well-being support, and reasonable working hours, particularly for younger doctors. These measures are intended to foster a supportive work environment, reduce burnout, and improve job satisfaction
