Speaking during an event at the Palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the First Lady highlighted that the Tinubu administration is still in its early stages and should be given time to implement its policies. She reassured the public that the government is working to address the nation’s challenges and stimulate economic growth.
The removal of the fuel subsidy, announced during President Tinubu’s inaugural address on May 29, 2023, was presented as necessary to Nigeria’s progress. However, the decision has sparked widespread criticism, with many citizens expressing discontent due to the increasing financial pressure.
Senator Tinubu visited Ife to inaugurate a hostel and a 2.7-kilometer road named after her, both of which were donated to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) by the Ooni of Ife.
“We are just two years into our administration, and we are not responsible for the current hardship. We are working to fix it and secure a better future,” she said. “Although the subsidy has been removed, with God’s help, Nigeria will be much greater in two years. Previous attempts to remove the subsidy failed, but with your prayers, we will build a stronger nation.”
She emphasized that her husband is not driven by greed and expressed gratitude to God for their positions. “My husband and I are not greedy. We are thankful to God for making us Nigeria’s leaders. It is rare for wealthy individuals to reach this level, but we are committed to not disappointing the country. With God’s guidance, we will reach the promised land,” she added.
The First Lady, an alumna of OAU from 41 years ago, also donated ₦1 billion to the university for its continued development.
The Ooni of Ife praised Senator Tinubu, recalling how she inspired young people during her time as First Lady of Lagos State. He particularly admired her New Era Initiative, which allowed secondary school students to experience governance as “One Day Governors,” offering opportunities to children from all backgrounds.
