Abuja-Based Artisan, Chukwudiaso Onyema, Shares Journey from Christianity to Traditional Beliefs in Exclusive Interview with VICTORIA EDEME
Could you provide some background information about yourself?
I’m Mazi Chukwudiaso Onyema, hailing from the Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State. Presently residing in Abuja, I work as a skilled furniture maker, aged 39. I come from a family of five brothers and two sisters. My upbringing was in Imo State until my uncle brought me to Abuja in 2000. Initially attending Junior Secondary School in Karo, I later completed my secondary education in Imo State due to a disagreement with my uncle. Subsequently, I returned to Abuja to pursue a career in furniture making.
Are you married?
Yes, I got married in 2019, and my wife and I are blessed with two children.
Were you raised in a Christian household?
Indeed, I was.
What was your upbringing like in a Christian environment?
It was generally positive; my parents provided a good upbringing, although there were some aspects where certain things were not fully disclosed. Interestingly, when I decided to distance myself from Christianity, some of my elders supported my choice.
Which church did your family attend?
We were members of the Catholic Church.
Your viral video, where you demanded a refund of your tithe and offerings from Dunamis Church, gained attention last year. When did you transition from the Catholic Church to Dunamis?
I initially transitioned from the Catholic Church to Living Faith Church in 2004. Later, in 2008, I joined Dunamis Church.
What prompted your transition from the Catholic Church to Living Faith?
The catalyst for my move from the Catholic Church to Living Faith was witnessing what I perceived as miraculous occurrences within the Living Faith congregation. I made the switch to investigate the authenticity of these miracles firsthand.
How did you verify the legitimacy of these purported miracles?
My intention was to be physically present to witness these events rather than relying solely on televised broadcasts. However, over time, I came to realize that these supposed miracles were orchestrated and lacked authenticity.
What led you to join Dunamis Church afterward?
After my time at Living Faith, I was drawn to Dunamis Church due to the remarkable testimonies and purported miracles showcased on Dunamis Television.
Why were you particularly interested in miracles within the context of Christianity?
My fascination wasn’t solely centered on miracles. Instead, I sought to validate the potency attributed to the name of Jesus, as depicted in the biblical narratives of miraculous occurrences. Thus, my church transitions were motivated by a desire for firsthand confirmation of these beliefs.
Did you undergo any formal biblical training during your time at Living Faith?
No, I didn’t partake in any structured biblical training sessions; I remained a regular church member without assuming any official role.
What was your experience like as a member of Dunamis Church?
During my tenure at Dunamis, I actively participated in various training programs and received certificates. While I adhered to practices such as tithing, offerings, and vows, my primary concern arose regarding tithing due to the tangible evidence associated with it, as opposed to other contributions.
When did you commence tithing?
I began tithing in 2008 upon joining Dunamis, influenced by the teachings and directives of the church leadership.
You mentioned evidence associated with tithing. Could you elaborate?
Certainly, my concern stemmed from the tangible evidence supporting the act of tithing. This prompted me to scrutinize its legitimacy more closely, leading to my eventual request for a tithe refund.
