Nigeria’s Fuel Imports Reach 2.3 Billion Litres Despite New Refinery Operations

Between September 11 and December 5, 2024, Nigeria imported 2.3 billion litres of petrol, despite the commencement of operations at both the Dangote and Port Harcourt refineries. This data, shared by the Nigerian Ports Authority, shows continued fuel imports even as the country seeks self-sufficiency in refined petroleum.

The Dangote Refinery, with a daily capacity of 650,000 barrels, and the Port Harcourt Refinery, which began producing and distributing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in mid and late 2024, respectively, have not stopped imports.

Recent figures from the Nigerian Ports Authority reveal that, in just the past three days, 52,000 metric tonnes (or 68.74 million litres) of petrol have been imported. These shipments arrived at Lagos’ Apapa Port, Tin Can Port, and the Calabar Port in Cross River State.

On December 3, 2024, the vessel Binta Saleh delivered 15.86 million litres of petrol to Apapa Port. On December 4, the Shamal delivered 26.44 million litres via Tin Can Port. Additionally, another 26.44 million litres is expected today via the Watson vessel at Calabar Port.
