A 19-year-old man from Indiana is potentially facing a lengthy prison term after being arrested for allegedly strangling his mother to death.
Conner Kobold, aged 19, has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated battery in connection with the tragic death of his mother, 43-year-old Shanelle Burns.
On February 5, police responded to their home in Valparaiso, where Burns was found unresponsive in the living room. Kobold shockingly confessed to strangling her, and despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Kobold’s decision to represent himself in court and the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death have raised concerns about his mental health, prompting investigations.
According to Mail Online, tensions had reportedly escalated between mother and son, leading Burns to issue Kobold an eviction notice. She had given him 30 days to secure a full-time job, tidy his room, and contribute more around the house.
As Kobold prepares to act as his own attorney, Superior Court Judge Michael Fish has requested a mental health evaluation to assess his competency.
“I want Dr. (Anand) Popli to assess whether you are capable of representing yourself,” Judge Fish stated during a hearing on Friday.
Fish emphasized the seriousness of the charges, explaining to Kobold that murder carries a potential sentence of 45 to 65 years.
During the hearing, Fish also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of self-representation and questioned Kobold about his qualifications and experience.
Kobold, who has a high school education and some public speaking experience, acknowledged his limited courtroom experience but expressed confidence in advocating for himself despite past mental health challenges.
When asked about his legal strategy, Kobold indicated a willingness to cooperate with the court and jury to ensure a fair decision.
Pending the mental health evaluation, Fish granted Kobold permission to represent himself in court proceedings.
If convicted on all charges, Kobold faces a possible sentence ranging from 45 to 84 years in prison, in addition to fines totaling $20,000.
A trial date has been scheduled for August 6.
