“Mr. Olawuyi had been caring for the lions since their birth on campus about 9 years ago, but tragically, the male lion attacked the man who had been dedicatedly feeding them.”

Despite efforts from other staff members present at the scene, the wild cat inflicted fatal injuries before any rescue could be attempted.

“The other staff members who witnessed the incident made valiant efforts to rescue their colleague, but unfortunately, the wild cat had already caused severe harm.”

Upon being informed of the situation, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE was briefed by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, confirming that despite all first aid and medical efforts, Olawuyi could not be saved.

In response to the tragedy, the University management took the difficult decision to euthanize the aggressive lion. Additionally, a delegation was dispatched to offer condolences and support to the deceased’s widow and children, urging them to find solace in the divine.

The statement concludes by announcing the commencement of a thorough investigation into the incident to determine both immediate and remote causes, ensuring such a tragic event does not recur in the future.
