Trial Set For 28 Lagos Gang Members Accused Of Endangering MotoristsThe Lagos State Taskforce announced on Tuesday that it will prosecute 28 miscreants arrested in various parts of the state for terrorizing and extorting motorists. According to the agency’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, these individuals have been extorting drivers whose vehicles break down on the highways, demanding what they refer to as “owo omotaku” or “breakdown money.”

The arrests were made during a raid in locations such as Mile 2, Alaba Rago, FESTAC, Apapa, and their surrounding areas. Abdulraheem described the group, known as “Omotaku,” as a longstanding nuisance to motorists, often forcing them to pay large sums when their vehicles fail on the road.

In response to the arrests, the Chairman of the agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, stated that the operation represents a positive step towards alleviating the suffering of motorists and residents affected by the group’s actions. He emphasized that the miscreants would face charges in court and reiterated the agency’s commitment to apprehending others involved in similar criminal activities.

“The Lagos State Taskforce is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” Akerele said through Abdulraheem. “We will not rest until every member of the Omotaku gang is arrested and made to answer for their crimes. All 28 suspects will be charged in court without delay.”

The spokesperson also encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities through the “See Something, Say Something” initiative, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the public and the agency in maintaining a safe and peaceful city.

In related news, the task force recently seized 82 motorcycles during operations in the Berger, Mile 2 Oke, and Orile areas of Lagos, following the ban on commercial motorcycle operations on major highways. Abdulraheem stated that this action is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to ensure that Lagos roads remain safe and navigable, warning that both riders and passengers who violate the ban will face prosecution.
