Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has attributed the escalating activities of bandits and kidnappers to the prevailing unemployment crisis in the nation. Speaking at the 9th International Trade Exhibition & Conference on Agrofood, Plastics, Printing, and Packaging in Lagos, Obasanjo underscored the correlation between joblessness and rising criminality.

The event, organized by FairTrade Messe and the Organisation for Technology Advancement of Cold Chain in West Africa, provided a platform for Obasanjo to address the pressing issue. He emphasized the importance of tackling unemployment to enhance national security, pointing out that many individuals resort to illicit activities due to lack of gainful employment opportunities.

A staunch advocate for agricultural development, Obasanjo reiterated the significance of agribusiness in fostering food security, employment generation, and economic prosperity. He emphasized the need for concerted efforts to boost agricultural productivity and make the sector more attractive to young people.

Highlighting the significance of policy consistency, Obasanjo called on policymakers to provide a conducive environment for farmers by ensuring stable policies and facilitating access to affordable financing. He stressed the pivotal role of agriculture in curbing youth emigration and enhancing domestic employment.

Obasanjo lamented the allure of the entertainment industry to Nigerian youths, urging stakeholders to glamorize agriculture and promote it as a lucrative career option. He emphasized the need to make agriculture appealing to young people by showcasing its potential for profitability and socioeconomic impact.
