UNICEF And Kwara Officials Raise Alarm Over Discrimination Against Girl-ChildrenKwara State Governor Mallam AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq has urged parents and guardians to stop discriminating against girl-children, emphasizing that girls possess equal potential as boys. Represented by Health Commissioner Dr. Amina El-Imam, the governor highlighted that laws such as the Child’s Rights Law and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law are in place to protect girls from discrimination and violence. “These laws ensure that children receive compulsory education and protection from all forms of violence and exploitation,” she stated.
The governor’s message emphasized creating an enabling environment for girls to reach their full potential. First Lady of Kwara State, Professor Olufolake AbdulRazaq, represented by Solid Minerals Commissioner Dr. Afeez Alabi Abolore, pledged continued advocacy for policies that improve girls’ access to education, healthcare, and protection from violence.
In her welcome address, Women Affairs Commissioner Hon. Opeyemi Afolashade commended the governor and First Lady for their efforts in restoring the integrity of the girl-child through the Committee on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. Afolashade noted the contributions of prominent women to the nation’s development, highlighting the importance of the girl-child in society.
Keynote Speaker Professor Biola Adimula encouraged girls to pursue quality education to combat inequality and discrimination, identifying poverty, cultural norms, and lack of infrastructure as barriers to their success. She also warned against drug abuse, premarital sex, and other negative behaviors that could jeopardize their futures.
