According to Naija News, Uzra Zeya, Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, revealed the comprehensive aid package, which brings total U.S. humanitarian assistance to sub-Saharan Africa for Fiscal Year 2024 to nearly $3.7 billion.

 

“This funding will be allocated through the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance,” the mission stated. “The aid is intended to address critical needs of vulnerable populations across the region, including refugees from conflict, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, stateless individuals, and other conflict-affected people.”

The assistance will focus on crises in the Sahel and other areas, aiming to support efforts like voluntary returns and refugee integration.

 

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, emphasized the importance of the funding, stating that it highlights the U.S.’s commitment to providing essential aid and supporting vulnerable populations across Africa. “This $27 million aid will significantly impact those in need in Nigeria and throughout the continent. It underscores our dedication to helping Nigeria address humanitarian challenges and build resilience against food insecurity and climate change,” Mills said.
