The event, held at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, was themed “Reforms In An Era Of Global Uncertainties: Whither Nigeria?”. Among the participants were Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Bismarck Rewane, Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company.
While the Private Sector argued that the proposed minimum wage was not feasible, Organised Labour maintained that it accurately reflected the current socioeconomic realities in Nigeria.
During the discourse, Ajaero, serving as a panelist, highlighted the sharp increase in the prices of essential goods and services, including transportation, electricity, and food. He pointed out that a bag of rice now costs about N84,000, and refilling a gas cylinder ranges between N16,000 and N17,000, amounting to about N30,000 monthly. Additionally, he mentioned the cost of a meal from a roadside food vendor, which is approximately N500 without meat.
Ajaero emphasized that for a family of six, the monthly expenditure on such basic necessities alone would reach around N270,000. He also referenced the United Nations’ provision that no individual should live on less than $2 per day. When calculated for a family of six, this amounts to $12 per day or $360 per month. Converting this amount to naira at the current exchange rate, Ajaero argued that the proposed minimum wage of N497,000 translates to approximately $20 per day, which aligns with global standards.
These comparisons underscored Ajaero’s assertion that the demand for N497,000 as the minimum wage reflects the true cost of living for Nigerian workers in today’s economic climate
