A special delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), has arrived in Niger Republic to engage in discussions with the nation’s coup leaders. Included in the delegation are Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray. The team landed in Niger on Thursday, following a mandate from President Bola Tinubu, the current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, to accelerate efforts towards resolving the ongoing political crisis.

This intervention aligns with the decisions reached at the recent extraordinary ECOWAS summit in Abuja, Nigeria. Before their departure, the delegation received a briefing from President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja. According to a statement released by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, President Tinubu has also sent another delegation, headed by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, to engage leaders of Libya and Algeria regarding the situation in Niger.

In his briefing, President Tinubu urged the delegations to vigorously engage with all stakeholders to reach a comprehensive and amicable resolution, prioritizing African peace and development over adopting the geopolitical stances of other nations. “We don’t want to hold briefs for anybody.
