In a memo issued by the Commanding Officer of SPU Base 16 in Lagos, Neji Veronica, and shared on by the Presidency, affected personnel were instructed to report back before the close of work on Monday, November 24, 2025.

The memo stated:
“In compliance with the directive of the President and Commander-in-Chief on the withdrawal of police personnel from VIPs, the Commanding Officer hereby orders the immediate return of all SPU Base 16 officers attached to VIPs and special beats across the country.
You are to report back before the end of today, Monday, 24/11/2025, and attend the Lecture Parade tomorrow. Attendance will be taken from the nominal roll. Strict compliance is required.”

President Tinubu had, on November 23, mandated the removal of police escorts from VIPs, emphasizing the need for officers to refocus on community safety and essential policing roles.

Going forward, VIPs who require armed security must apply to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead of the police.

According to the Presidency, the policy addresses the shortage of police personnel in rural and high-risk areas, noting that many communities have extremely limited police presence.

The statement added that Tinubu expects officers to return to “their core policing responsibilities.”
