Former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, has accused the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, of involvement in large-scale theft of public funds.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a video obtained by Sahara Reporters, Maina called for a thorough investigation into Malami’s activities, alleging widespread financial misconduct and questionable asset recoveries linked to past administrations.

Speaking on issues of asset recovery and corruption within government, Maina claimed that the scale of the alleged theft had not yet been fully uncovered.

“Malami allegedly stole huge sums of money. What the government has seen so far is not even up to one quarter. My area of expertise is tracing and recovering public funds wherever they are, and that is why they have been after me,” he said.

Maina further alleged that additional recoverable assets were connected to Malami, questioning the magnitude of properties already linked to ongoing investigations.

“We can still recover more from Malami. What has been uncovered so far is far less than what exists. What is ₦217 billion worth of properties?” he asked.

Despite his allegations, Maina expressed support for current accountability efforts, noting that transparency and adherence to the rule of law were essential for governance.

“Yes, the government is doing the right thing. Accountability, transparency and the rule of law must prevail, and that is what I see this government trying to do,” he stated.

He contrasted the present administration with previous ones, claiming that the alleged misconduct occurred under earlier governments.

“These things happened during the last administration. I don’t believe such actions could happen under the current administration,” Maina said.

Maina also recounted events surrounding his alleged summons from abroad, referencing interactions involving former presidents and senior officials.

“How could someone come to Abu Dhabi? The late President Muhammadu Buhari was there. They begged me, but I refused to return to Nigeria,” he claimed.

According to him, pressure was later exerted through his family. “They went back to Nigeria and made my mother insist that I must return, because Jonathan had told them I recovered ₦1.6 trillion during his tenure. This can be verified by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,” he added.

He further made allegations concerning asset recoveries under the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during a previous leadership.

“There were about 227 properties under Magu, and I can tell you—allegedly—these properties were shared among Magu, his associates and Malami. That was one of the reasons for the fallout between Malami and Magu,” Maina alleged.
