Where Was The Ambulance?” – Wike Slams Protest, Questions Its Real Motive
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, took a subtle swipe at former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, over his participation in the protest demanding electronic transmission of election results.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Amaechi attended the rally alongside his son, a medical doctor. Speaking on Tuesday at the Distinguished Personality Lecture at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Abuja, Wike questioned Amaechi’s claim that he brought his son to provide medical support for injured protesters.
Describing the move as a clear attempt to manipulate public sentiment, Wike argued that true leadership requires action, not “theatrical displays” aimed at misleading the youth.
“He said he came with his son, a medical doctor, to attend to anyone injured. But where was the ambulance? Where was the medical equipment? You cannot treat people with empty hands,” Wike said.
The minister further criticized Amaechi and other opposition figures, claiming their sudden push for electronic transmission reflects political opportunism. He noted that many of those now agitating for electoral reforms were silent on such issues while holding powerful government positions.
“When they are out of office, they suddenly become the voice of the people,” Wike remarked, calling the current protest “transactional” and aimed more at advancing political interests than genuine democratic reform.
He urged students of the University of Abuja to remain alert to political manipulation, emphasizing that the true “dividends of democracy” are realized through infrastructure development and strong institutions, not protest slogans.
