Wike Fires Back: Why My Hands Are Clean In Rivers Local Government Elections
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has brushed aside criticisms regarding his role in the recently concluded local government elections in Rivers State, insisting that his influence was limited to his own local government, Obio/Akpor, where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike lashed out at critics who faulted him for not extending his political weight to other local governments where the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured wins.
“So, Wike is very popular today. Are these not the same people I hear on Arise, AIT, and Channels saying Wike cannot determine what happens outside his own local government? Now you are angry that APC won in other areas. That means you are asking why I did not influence elections in places where I have no political hold,” he said.
The former Rivers governor argued that as a loyal PDP member, his responsibility was to deliver his stronghold, which he achieved.
“I influenced and campaigned for my people to vote PDP, and they did. PDP won in Obio-Akpor with 328,823 votes. Now you’re upset that APC won elsewhere, but I’ve always maintained that my influence lies in my own local government,” Wike added.
He further explained that voter turnout is usually higher during council elections because communities perceive them as more personal and immediate than governorship or presidential contests.
“In local government elections, turnout is higher. Councilorship is like a community or family affair, and people take it very seriously—sometimes even more than governorship elections. So, I don’t understand your worry. Is the concern that the process was illegal, or that you don’t believe people turned out in such numbers?” he queried.
Wike also reminded his critics of his deep-rooted influence in Obio/Akpor, built over years of political leadership.
“I was chairman of that local government, and I made history by serving two terms when no one else had. I later became governor of the state. My record speaks for itself, whether you like it or not. My people believe in me,” he declared.
