Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike dismissed claims that his concerns were about the convention’s venue, stressing that the real challenge lies in unresolved disputes within the party.

“The issue of the National Convention is not the venue; it is the problems leading to the convention. If those are not addressed, there’s a likelihood the convention will not hold,” Wike stated.

No Rift With Makinde

Wike also denied speculations linking his remarks to a disagreement with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

“Some people claim I’m quarrelling with Seyi and that’s why I said the convention won’t hold in Ibadan. That is false. The subject is not about the venue, but whether the party has done what it is supposed to do before holding the convention,” he clarified.

The FCT Minister revealed that the PDP has set up a committee to address lingering issues in the South-East, particularly in Ebonyi State. “Our team is meeting by 7pm today and you’ll hear what we have to say,” he disclosed.

Venue Secondary, Issues Primary

Wike stressed that PDP conventions have been held in Port Harcourt and Abuja in the past, and the venue has never been the real issue.

“The party can decide to hold it in Sokoto or Borno. What matters is whether you have resolved the issues before heading into the convention. If not, it could be a setback,” he warned.

He concluded by urging the party leadership to tackle grievances satisfactorily to avoid disruptions.

“The PDP has taken some steps to resolve these issues. If they are resolved to the satisfaction of the aggrieved, then there’s no problem. But if not, they will certainly react,” Wike cautioned.
