The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has issued a firm demand to the Bola Tinubu-led federal government, urging an immediate withdrawal of the recent electricity tariff hike. Expressed in a letter penned by Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike and directed to Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, the union asserts that the tariff surge will trigger a domino effect, driving up the cost of goods and adversely impacting the underprivileged.
Revisiting the decision made by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on April 3, targeting customers designated under the “Band A” classification, the tariff escalation is slated to burden those enjoying 20 hours of daily power supply. In this adjustment, Band A consumers face an alarming jump from N66 to N225 per kilowatt-hour.
The NUEE vehemently denounces this tariff revision as incongruous with the economic strain already faced by the nation, alleging a lack of stakeholder consultation in the minister’s decision-making process. Moreover, the union highlights the inadvertent consequences, warning of a surge in foreign product consumption as local alternatives become financially unattainable under the new tariff regime.
Expressing concern for the safety of its members, the NUEE underscores the risk of community backlash during disconnection visits. The union’s statement accentuates the dire impact of this tariff hike on the populace, questioning the sensibility behind claims that it would solely affect Band A consumers.
With a resounding call for the withdrawal of the tariff increase, the NUEE advocates for a reconsideration of energy policies that prioritize constant and affordable power supply for all Nigerians. As guardians of the nation’s power sector, the union stands firm in its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the citizenry amidst these challenging times.
