In an interview with Arise TV on Tuesday, Professor Yilwatda revealed that approximately 20,000 households from IDP camps will be involved in the project. He emphasized that the farming program is designed to restore the dignity of IDPs and enhance their resilience.
Yilwatda explained that IDPs, who have been severely affected by both natural disasters and conflicts, are facing a “double jeopardy” situation. Displaced by floods, insurgency, and climate change, many have lost not only their homes but also their dignity. The new initiative aims to address these challenges by empowering the IDPs and rebuilding their resilience.
“We are developing 10,000 hectares of land for this project and creating cooperatives for the IDPs. By January, two people will share one hectare of land,” he said. The Minister further explained that the government would provide all necessary farming inputs and support, including counseling services, to ensure the success of the program.
The project is expected to benefit 20,000 households, translating to around 100,000 people. The government plans to purchase 70% of the harvested crops from the IDPs, storing them in the country’s strategic reserves for future use, while the remaining 30% will be distributed as food.
Yilwatda confirmed that preparations for the program are already underway, with procurement completed and plans for dry season farming set to begin in January. The initiative, he stated, is part of the President’s commitment to improving the lives of displaced persons and contributing to national food security.
