The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) issued a warning on Thursday regarding the proliferation of indiscriminate buildings within TCN right-of-ways in Enugu State. Additionally, the TCN expressed concern over the obstruction and abandonment of 21 power projects in the South East region since 2019, attributing these challenges to the activities of local residents.
Mr. Emmanuel Akpa, the General Manager (Transmission) of the Enugu Region, revealed these issues during a press conference in Enugu. He disclosed that the 21 power projects were initiated in 2019 to enhance power supply in various locations, including Arochukwu, Okigwe, Nnewi, Enugu, Nsukka, Orlu, Nineth Mile, and Nike. Akpa emphasized that, despite the completion of similar projects in other parts of the country, those in the South East faced sabotage and legal complications initiated by residents, even after the Federal Government had provided compensation.
Akpa expressed concern over the impact of litigation on the completion of these critical projects, noting that certain residents were undermining initiatives crucial for the region’s economic development. He urged the people of the South East to adopt a positive approach toward power projects to foster economic growth.
The General Manager also highlighted additional challenges faced by TCN in the region, including buildings encroaching on TCN right-of-ways, illegal soil excavation around tower bases in areas like New Artisan market, Goshen Estate, and Centenary Avenue. He warned about the dangers of constructing under the 330 KVA lines, emphasizing the risk of death due to radiation and the potential damage caused by line snapping.
