Deputy spokesperson of the House, Philip Agbese, made this statement during an interview with journalists on Wednesday. This followed reports by Daily Trust that Gbajabiamila, a former House Speaker, had undertaken oversight visits to various government bodies, including the National Agricultural Land Development Authority, the Bureau of Public Procurement, and several other agencies.
Contrary to the report suggesting that Agbese acknowledged Gbajabiamila’s right to conduct oversight, Agbese emphasized that his comments were misrepresented. He reaffirmed that oversight functions are constitutionally reserved for the National Assembly under Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Agbese clarified that while visits by the Chief of Staff are acceptable as part of executive functions, they should not be categorized as oversight, which is strictly within the remit of the National Assembly. He stated, “What I communicated was that while the Chief of Staff’s visits are permissible, labeling them as oversight activities conflicts with constitutional provisions. Such visits can be seen as courtesy, but they should not be mistaken for oversight responsibilities.”
