During a press conference at the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Centre in Sokoto, ASUU Chairman for the Sokoto Zone, Prof. Abubakar Yabo, stated that the memorandum of action signed between the union and the Federal Government, which led to the suspension of their 2022 strike and was part of the 2009 Nimi Briggs agreement, remains unaddressed.

Yabo highlighted several key agreements that have yet to be implemented, including the release of withheld salaries for three and a half months due to the 2022 strike, as well as unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

He also mentioned outstanding third-party deductions, such as check-off dues and cooperative contributions, and funding for the revitalization of public universities included in the 2023 Federal Government budget.

ASUU criticized the government for failing to honor these agreements and instead allowing some state university visitors and “tyrannical vice chancellors” at federal universities to resort to victimization and emotional distress of its members. “The union expresses dismay that while government and university administrators should uphold truth and protect the integrity of public universities, they are acting as agents of destruction,” Yabo stated.

The union further noted that the current economic hardships exacerbated by unpopular government policies have made the teaching and learning environment increasingly hostile, and emphasized the need for the government to safeguard and respect academic freedom.

ASUU expressed concern over the behavior of “overzealous university vice chancellors” who have become “intoxicated with power” and are victimizing innocent union members. The union called on these universities to adopt a more civil approach and adhere to global best practices by treating academic staff with the respect they deserve.

The union also urged the Federal Government to abandon its “anti-intellectual posture” and treat public universities with dignity by fulfilling its commitments. “The survival of this nation is tied to the survival of public universities; therefore, let them breathe, Mr. President,” he added.

The ASUU Sokoto zone comprises Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Umaru Musa Yaradua University, Katsina State University of Science and Technology, Sokoto State University, Federal University Dustin-Ma, Federal University Birnin Kebbi, Federal University Gusau, Shehu Shagari University of Education, and Federal University Zuru.
