Enugu Government Explains Rationale Behind Tax On CorpsesThe Enugu State Government has clarified its rationale for imposing a tax on corpses in mortuaries throughout the state. His comments followed the release of a circular regarding the Mortuary Tax, which was addressed to morticians in the state. Nnamani explained that the tax aligns with the existing Mortuary Tax Law, which has been in place for several years, indicating that this is not a new policy for the state.
He specified that the mortuary tax is set at ₦40 per day, contrary to reports suggesting it was ₦40,000. “This is an indirect tax paid by mortuary owners, not the families of the deceased. It’s only ₦40, not ₦40,000. Since its introduction, no one has been denied the opportunity to bury their loved ones,” Nnamani stated. He further elaborated that if a body remains in the mortuary for 100 days, the total tax payable would amount to ₦4,000.
Nnamani reiterated that the purpose of the tax is not to boost state revenue but to discourage prolonged retention of deceased individuals in mortuaries. Reports from Naija News indicate that the circular referenced the provisions of Section 34 of the Births, Deaths, and Burials Law, Cap 15, Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004, which authorized the implementation of the Mortuary Tax.
The statement read, “A fee of ₦40 is to be paid by the owners of a corpse if it is not buried within twenty-four hours, and this amount will continue to accrue daily. Mortuary owners are required to ensure payment before collecting the corpses for burial and to remit this to the ESIRS in any commercial bank under the Enugu State IGR Account for mortuary tax.
