Currently receiving treatment at Mercyland Hospital, Alabi shared his harrowing experience with Sunday Punch, expressing disbelief at the sudden collapse. “There were no visible cracks in the building. I still can’t understand what caused it, but God knows,” he said tearfully.

The disaster struck after a 30-minute downpour that accompanied the storm, which reportedly blew through the windows of the bungalow. Alabi, a native psychiatric doctor, survived because he had briefly stepped out to use the restroom at around 12:10 am. Moments later, he heard the rumbling sound of the collapse that took nearly all his family members and patients.

“Everyone in my family was asleep; that’s the last thing I remember before waking up in the hospital. I survived by the grace of God,” he recounted.

Alabi explained that he was using the building as a clinic for psychiatric rehabilitation, where his patients lived with him. Tragically, nine of them died in the collapse. “They were on the path to recovery before this happened. One guardian had agreed to let their patient stay with me to aid in their recovery. They lived freely and peacefully with my family,” he noted.

He also mourned the loss of his first wife, who was around 70 years old, saying, “I am devastated. I have nowhere to go; I am homeless. I appeal to well-meaning Nigerians for help.”

Alabi expressed gratitude for the rescue efforts, acknowledging the critical roles played by those who helped pull survivors from the debris. His younger sister, Jelilatu Olapade, confirmed that the building had no visible structural issues before it collapsed.

She shared that the children who died were asleep on the ground floor and could not escape. “Those who survived were upstairs. My daughter, a survivor, is in another ward receiving treatment for injuries. She managed to evacuate her newborn and another child just in time; otherwise, they could have been crushed,” she said.
