Nigerians In Libya At Risk Of Widespread Arrests After CAF DecisionThe Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ruled in favor of Nigeria’s Super Eagles after the team was detained for over 20 hours at Al-Abraq Airport in eastern Libya, causing them to miss a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Libya. The CAF Disciplinary Committee awarded Nigeria three points and three goals for the abandoned match, citing violations by the Libyan Football Federation (LFF).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The situation arose when the Super Eagles were diverted less than an hour before landing in Benghazi, with Libyan authorities redirecting their flight to Al-Abraq Airport, located 150 miles from their original destination. Stranded overnight, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) opted to withdraw the team from the match and subsequently filed a complaint with CAF.
CAF determined that the LFF violated Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. The committee, led by Chairman Ousmane Kane, also imposed a $50,000 fine on the LFF, which must be paid within 60 days.
LFF President Nasser Al-Suwai’I criticized the ruling as “unjust and malicious,” suggesting that the NFF’s influence within CAF affected the outcome. He announced plans to appeal the decision and potentially escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Following CAF’s ruling, reports indicate increased tensions between Nigeria and Libya, with a rise in arrests and fines targeting Nigerians living in Libya. A Libyan news blog, Libya News Today 1, stated that all local TV channels are calling for the government to crack down on Nigerians working without legal documentation, suggesting fines of $500 and urging their return to Nigeria. The post, which has gained significant traction online, included a statement from a Libyan TV presenter emphasizing the need for tax compliance among foreign workers.
