This follows the devastating stampedes that claimed 67 lives, including 35 children, during funfairs and food distribution events in Ibadan (Oyo State), Okija (Anambra State), and Abuja. Participants rushing to secure free food items were trampled, resulting in fatalities. The police confirmed 35 children dead in Ibadan, 10 deaths in Abuja, and 22 fatalities in Okija.

In response, the Lagos State Government has mandated that individuals and organizations planning events with over 250 attendees—during or after the festive season—must register with state safety agencies. The government warned that non-compliance would lead to sanctions against event organizers.

During a media briefing on Sunday, the State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, alongside state safety commission officials, underscored the necessity of crowd control measures to avert such disasters.

“The Lagos State Government is deeply concerned about the recent stampede incidents in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja,” Omotosho said. “Any individual, group, or organization planning to distribute items or hold large gatherings must secure clearance from the state government and register with the safety commissions.”

Officials reiterated that these measures are critical to safeguarding lives and ensuring orderly public events.
