Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has formed a disciplinary committee to investigate senior police officers who have allegedly refused to retire after reaching the mandatory retirement thresholds of 60 years of age or 35 years in service.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The committee is set to meet at the Force Headquarters in Abuja from Tuesday to Thursday. Those summoned include an Assistant Inspector General (AIG), at least two Commissioners of Police (CPs), and a senior police legal officer. The IGP has instructed the officers to appear in “clean working dress,” emphasizing that the dress code must be strictly observed throughout the proceedings.

PSC Orders Immediate Retirements Amid Legal Disputes

Earlier this month, the Police Service Commission (PSC) directed the immediate retirement of all officers surpassing the 35-year service mark or 60-year age limit. Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, explained that the commission had revisited a 2017 plenary decision, concluding that it contradicted public service rules.

“The previous decision conflicted with the principle of service merger in the public sector and violated Public Service Rule No 020908 (i & ii), which mandates retirement after 35 years of service or upon reaching 60 years of age,” Ani stated.

Following the 1st Extraordinary Meeting of the 6th Management Board on January 31, 2025, the PSC communicated this directive to the IGP for enforcement. However, the move has sparked controversy, particularly as IGP Egbetokun’s own tenure was extended by President Bola Tinubu, despite him meeting the same retirement criteria.
