This project, the second under the Interconnected Mini-grid Accelerated Scheme (IMAS), was funded by the European Union and the German government, at a cost of €9.5 million, with plans to expand to 1.5MW in the coming years.

During the inauguration, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized that the project would transform the community, ensuring that every Nigerian has access to a better life. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the power sector but highlighted the steady progress being made.

He stated, “Through IMAS, the Lambata community now has access to 990kWp of renewable energy, which will significantly improve local living standards and economic activities. This project is a shining example of how international partnerships, coupled with national efforts, can bring meaningful change to communities in need.”

Chief Adelabu further explained that the commissioning of the mini-grid would have profound socio-economic effects. “Access to reliable electricity will boost economic activities, empower local businesses, and create new job opportunities. It will also improve healthcare and education services, supporting schools, clinics, and other essential facilities,” he added.

The project also aligns with Nigeria’s long-term environmental sustainability goals. By replacing polluting energy sources such as diesel and kerosene, it will help reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and contribute to environmental preservation for future generations.

Mr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), revealed that the EU and the German government contributed €9.7 million to the project. He highlighted that the IMAS initiative focuses on providing sustainable and renewable electricity to underserved communities, reducing reliance on conventional and polluting energy sources.

“IMAS aims to bring clean energy solutions to communities that have long lacked reliable power, fostering environmental sustainability while improving living conditions. The mini-grid in Lambata is a prime example of this vision,” Aliyu said. “Through this initiative, we’ve developed a scalable and sustainable energy infrastructure that will benefit 125,000 individuals across Nigeria, including right here in Lambata. We are grateful for the ongoing support of our development partners, which has made this project a reality.”
