In a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB dismissed Amnesty International Nigeria as a compromised organization that has lost its credibility and now serves the interests of the Nigerian federal government rather than upholding human rights.

IPOB expressed dismay that an organization once known for defending civil liberties would stoop so low as to collaborate with those it described as blackmailers in targeting IPOB and its Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“The global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) strongly condemns what can only be described as a state-sponsored terrorist assault on civilians along the Okigwe-Owerri Road in Imo State on May 8, 2025,” the statement read.

“We equally condemn the deliberate media blackmail orchestrated by Amnesty International Nigeria, falsely implicating IPOB and ESN in these heinous acts.”

The group accused the Nigerian government of repeatedly staging attacks against its own citizens to paint IPOB as violent and suppress their self-determination movement. It also pointed to past incidents, including the 2021 Owerri prison break, which they claimed was orchestrated and conveniently blamed on IPOB, even though no proper investigation was ever conducted.

“We categorically state that we are innocent of the baseless accusations made by the federal government and the profit-seeking Amnesty International Nigeria,” IPOB added.

The group called for the involvement of impartial international investigative bodies to probe the crimes for which IPOB and ESN are being blamed, emphasizing that Nigerian authorities have consistently failed to conduct credible investigations before leveling accusations.
